Rhode Island Authors Showcase - Featuring Joann Mead!
The Rhode Island Authors Showcase is back! Each day in November, I’ll be featuring a different RI author. Each post features a giveaway – a book, an anthology, or something else! All you have to do to be eligible for the daily drawing is leave a comment on the blog post. I’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner one week after the blog post (to give you time to catch up).
By commenting on each post, you’re also entered to win our bigger prizes: GRAND PRIZE is a $250 Amazon gift card, BONUS PRIZE is a $100 Amazon gift card, and the CHEER UP YOU WON SOMETHING PRIZE is a $50 Amazon gift card. The big prizes will be chosen, again using a random number generator, on December 7.
I'm happy to welcome author Joann Mead to the blog today! And, of course, I've got questions:
Where is your hometown? East Greenwich, Rhode Island
What genre(s) do you write? Thrillers, Crime, Medical Mystery
What have you written? Underlying Crimes (2012), Tiger Tiger (2016), Designer Baby (2019)
Who are your favorite authors? John le Carré, Elena Ferrante, Michael Crichton
What were your favorite books growing up? From Mad Magazine to Crime and Punishment (Dostoyevsky)
What do you like best about writing? Escapism. It allows me to transcend my everyday mundane thoughts. Writing is a place where I can create stories about what might have happened in the past or may happen in the future. It’s a place where I can merge together my life experiences with what I’ve learned along the way.
What do find most challenging about writing? I need to feel my writing is worth reading and not just fanciful drivel. So, it’s important to me that what may seem like sci-fi novels are actually based on real science. I like doing the “homework” so that my books are not superficial but challenging creations. Something that will make my readers think.
Where do you draw your inspiration? I’m inspired by the countries I’ve lived in (the US, UK, USSR and Africa) and others countries I’ve travelled. Some of my novels are local while others span the globe.
My mysteries and thrillers are connected by the “underlying crimes” of genetic design. Two Rhode Island sleuths, Jo and Jeremy Blair, try to get to the bottom of the crimes and apprehend the perpetrators.
My novels and stories often blur the lines between fact and fiction. I believe that what is real can be imagined. And what is imagined can be real.
You’ve just been given the chance to collaborate on a book with (the late) John le Carré (he'll travel back in time for you). What’s the title going to be? The Inconstant Gardener

Joann's short stories "The Summer of '64," "Married in Moscow," and "A Most Unusual Proposal" are featured in ARIA anthologies.
My short stories, “The Summer of ‘64”, “Married in Moscow” and “A Most Unusual Proposal” were chosen for the Rhode Island Authors ARIA Anthology in 2022, 2020 and 2018: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rhode+island+authors+anthology&crid=J69LQ5UZTQ7M&sprefix=rhode+island+authors+anthology%2Caps%2C82&ref=nb_sb_noss
Joann has offered to give away a copy of her thriller novel, Designer Baby. Here's a brief description: She offers people a dream, their own perfected Designer Baby. A most wanted bioterrorist, she creates deadly bioweapons and designs super-human babies. She’s a DNA hacker who manipulates and mutates and changes like a chameleon. In a world under threat by genetic attack, everyone wants to find her, including the men she has scammed. Rhode Island sleuths Jo and Jeremy Blair, US intelligence, Chinese MSS, Russian FSB, and the Scandinavian Police are in hot pursuit of Tiger Girl. They follow her trail in Sweden and Norway on a journey that brings them perilously close to confrontation. Whoever traps Tiger Girl wins the prized trophy. But tigers are elusive. Catch her if you can.
