Holidays Amaze

Holidays Amaze

Do holidays amaze, or are holidays a maze? They are both, as the book Holidays Amaze illustrates with its maze poems, prayer poems, shaped poems, sonnets, and narratives. The poems that look like mazes, in addition to the ones that use maze symbolism, make Holidays Amaze an amazing collection of poems to enjoy.

Dr. Karen Petit‘s inspiration for this book was two items: a chapter about Thanksgiving in Mayflower Dreams and a poem that she wrote in 2014:

A May Flower in November 1620

The flowers of May were blooming away

in summer’s great warmth and fall’s wintry air.

A petal broke off, went sailing astray,

into the wind, with a Separatist’s prayer.

It paused in the sky with the blue turning gray;

then continued its trip ’til wooden beams were near.

When one of them cracked, the petal did say:

“I fear for my life! This storm’s so unfair!”

“But I know, in this world, many are things unfixed.”

“’cause I trust in my Lord, to Him I’ll pray.”

With prayers and repairs, the beam was soon fixed.

“I thank thee, Lord, for strengthening my ‘May.’”

The voyage moved on; many problems eclipsed.

In November within a New World’s bay,

the flower became Mayflower in-mixed.

This poem first was posted on Petit’s Mayflower Dreams blog and is now one of the poems in Holidays AmazeThinking a lot about Thanksgiving as an amazing holiday helped the author to also think about other holidays as amazing. These connections resulted in her creation of Holidays Amaze and maze poems.

Beside the Music

What Happens to a Marriage when an 80s Metal Band Moves In?

My name is BJ Knapp, and I am the author of Beside the Music.

What would happen to your life and marriage if an 80s metal band like Def Leppard moved into your house? Seriously, take a sec, look around your house and imagine where you’d stash four rockers, their management, and crew. Now imagine all the other things that come with a has-been 80s metal band—the other kinds of baggage. The “Do you know who I am?” attitude that formerly famous people try to pull, and the temper tantrum that ensues when people no longer know who they are. This is what happens in Beside the Music. Brenda and Tim have no idea what they’re in for when 80s sensation Hydra moves into their house while the band records their comeback album.

Brenda thought it would be great. She thought she’d be sitting at her kitchen table with Hydra as they pull all-night lyric writing sessions. She thought she’d sit on an amp in the studio and get to hear all the new songs before anyone else.

But it ends up not being anything like that at all. She hates to admit it, but having Hydra live with her and Tim is a total nightmare. Tim’s running for office, she’s gunning for the big promotion at work, and her snooty meddling mother-in-law shows up at the worst possible moments to hassle her. Instead of getting to be the rock and roll muse, Hydra nearly destroys her career and marriage. Tim moves out to get away from Hydra’s chaos, and her boss is threatening to fire her if she can’t get her act together at work.

Brenda needs to decide what’s more important to her… rock and roll or her marriage? Is it possible to be one man’s wife and another man’s muse?

Knapp

As a former college radio station DJ, BJ was inspired to write this book after asking herself “Whatever happened to all those 80s rock stars and one-hit wonders?” Her writing career has contributions to RI Fit Magazine. But her prouder achievements are her original angry chick rock songs, usually about bad boyfriends, accompanied by her out of tune guitar.

BJ resides in Rhode Island with her husband, Todd, and dogs Nemo and Potter. She is an avid sailor and scuba diver, and also enjoys pretty much any outdoor activity. She has also single-handedly orchestrated hundreds of failed attempts at cooking. Follow BJ’s blog here.

Corey Calligano book

At 30 years old, and a full-time mom of three little ones, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. When I found out my fate, I wanted to know exactly what was going to happen to me with every treatment I was about to endure, and with every emotion I would feel.

I hope this journal can help someone else who gets a similar diagnosis, or if you’re caring for someone who has been diagnosed. I am a survivor, and this is my story.

Espeut book

What will you read in this book? You will read about advice that is straight from the hip – he tells it as it is – recognizing that life pulls on us, this way and that, but that you cannot allow excuses to stand in the way of your goals.

Matt’s dedication to educating people starts with his nephew and his Boy Scout troop and extends to Arthur, his octogenarian client who comes to work with him in street shoes and khakis. Never hesitating to help others, Matt shares his advice with people in a local online blog, on the radio, by speaking, writing for publications, and each day in his very active social media presence. Going to where the people are, rather than waiting for them to come to him makes him unique in this world where so many are only concerned with making a buck as their ultimate goal – not making people happy and healthy – which is Matt’s ultimate goal.

When you hear someone say – hey, you’re the real deal – you might wonder what that means. As you read this book, think about that phrase, because that is what you are getting – not a weight-loss gimmick or a funky plan of some sort to give you temporary success or a looking-good fix. What you will get is a lifetime plan – one that will give you the knowledge and the motivation to not only look good, but to stay healthy. Who are you doing that for? Well, first, for yourself, Matt would say. But he’d also say, do this for those who love you – and those you are responsible for – your family, parents, and children. They deserve to have you around for a very long time. In doing so, you will be a role model for them, too. And that’s how we change the world.

Espeut
Matt had a dream. His dream wasn’t to own a gym or become successful in business. It was to restore people to good health.
For over 25 years, clients from fourteen to eighty-six have benefited by life changes under Matt’s direction. These changes go way beyond the technical part of exercise. Matt works with the whole person and his advice and counsel include nutrition and a healthy mindset. Overall health, strength and functional conditioning has always been his focus and today, as a successful owner of a Fit Body Boot Camp franchise in Providence, Rhode Island, his dream has allowed other people to have their dreams come true, too.
On a personal basis, Matt walks the walk, and talks the talk, that’s for sure. His own fitness as a late-40s man stands as an example to those he instructs. The occasional modeling gig further demonstrates all life can be when you have your health and proper mindset.

Book-a-Day #Giveaway Featuring Author Michael A. Battey

Battey book

The Parent Trap Columns Volume I is the first in a two-volume collection of humorous and insightful observations on contemporary teen parenting by Michael A. Battey, an East Greenwich, Rhode Island based doctor. Published in community newspapers within Rhode Island over several years, the columns reflect the author’s personal experience along with commentary on parenting trends, and public education.  Each book comes with a reading rubber ducky!

From the editor of the East Greenwich Pendulum, who published his columns for many years: Sometimes you get lucky and such material falls into your lap. Michael Battey was such a case. I got a letter in the mail one day with an opinion piece on child-rearing from him and recognized that there was a place in our paper for this sort of editorial copy. Michael and I talked and we agreed to run a regularly occurring column on the difficulties of raising children in the 21st century, especially in an affluent, competitive town such as East Greenwich, RI. Michael filled the bill dependably and admirably for nearly a decade with his column “The Parent Trap,” helping parents raise their children and us raise our circulation. With the release of a collection of his columns, it is good to see that his timeless parental wisdom will be reserved in print form.

Michael A. Battey, D.P.M. was born and raised in Rhode Island. He received degrees from the University of Rhode Island, and the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He maintains a private practice in foot and ankle care with a specialty in hospital based residency training, and is a faculty member at the Brown University Alpert Medical School.

He was the author of The Parent Trap column, published from 2005 – 2012 in the East Greenwich Pendulum and sister newspapers in the Southern Rhode Island Newspaper Group. His interests include local education, squash racquets, and time at the beach with family and friends.

The author is giving away a print copy of his book – just leave a comment on this blog post to be eligible! Drawing is a week from today.

Stone Angels Michael Hartigan

Traveling on the Page for a New Perspective

Travel and literature go together like Hemingway and Key West. Some of history’s most beloved books are journey tales that send protagonists adventuring from one destination to another, across lands real or imagined. In the travel tale there is always a physical destination, but it is about more than just that – characters embark on internal voyages of growth, be they spiritual, emotional or otherwise. The main character may be seeking treasure or fame but underneath they are seeking love, redemption, revenge or peace. Shakespeare, Tolkien, Hemingway, Steinbeck – the list goes on and on of writers utilizing the journey and rich depictions of a place to drive home their thematic purpose and bring a story to life.

As a journalist – travel writer to be exact – I put great value on these types of stories. And my travel writing influences my fiction writing a great deal, in style and substance. My novel, Stone Angels, is about a young man struggling with an extremely guilty conscience. The setting places him on a road trip, up and down the Atlantic Coast, to and from Spring Break. But the reader is placed inside his head, following his introspective journey from denial to acceptance to possible confession of his many sins and ultimately redemption.

In many ways, Stone Angels is a quintessential journey story, one that embraces the power of travel and the need to get out of one’s comfort zone, shrug off the warm fuzzy sweater that is our daily lives and let the unknown provide a new perspective. Stone Angels does this for the main character and for the reader. My goal was to send readers on their own journey, allowing them to explore their emotional response to this very intimate story and maybe gain a new perspective, like all good travel should do.
