(Print copies for US residents only, please. If you live outside the US and win, you’ll receive a digital copy of this book.)

Donna McCarthy is a semi-retired Art teacher, currently teaching HS art part-time in Rhode Island, which allows her the time to create her picture books. Donna is both author and illustrator with a BFA in illustrations and an MA in education.

At the age of 50, Donna had some big life changes and moved across the country, leaving every part of her former life other than her daughter and her dog, ready to take a chance on her dream. Her books are the result of the last three years of effort.

Donna has self-published five picture books, with three more in the works. She writes for primary level readers and intermediate level readers. Her books are great for the tiny ones as well since the pictures are large, colorful, and whimsical and the rhyming helps with phonemic awareness. She is also aware of being inclusive since we live in such a beautiful world filled with a blessed variety of beautiful people. She has a blast making them and she thinks she is more entertained sometimes than her readers. Donna also offers a free school assembly or reading/drawing tutorial for a business or organization that caters to kids.

Donna’s online store can be found at www.missmacbooks.com.

The book she’s giving away is “Some People’s Grandpas,” a whimsical look at all the unique and silly types of grandpas out there.

Jan Cornell book cover

Since Jan was a just a little girl she dreamed of one day becoming a mom.  When her dream was realized, it represented Jan’s single proudest accomplishment in life. Little did she know how hard it would be! Without the support of a traditional family of her own, Jan was thrown into motherhood headfirst while also juggling a very busy career in corporate America. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, Katie, who is now 4, Jan was diagnosed with a devastating and critical case of Lyme Disease, which is extremely prevalent in the state of Rhode Island. Jan was left shattered and fighting for her life with a newborn in tow and an active five-year old boy. Jan quickly figured out that if she were going to survive what she called ‘rock bottom,’ she was going to have to brainstorm some easy parenting tips, tricks, and hacks in order to survive and keep her family thriving. After implementing various parenting hacks and tricks into her own home life, she began to feel relief as her routine got much easier. Jan started sharing her parenting tips and tricks with others, mostly via social media. The feedback she received from other parents was so tremendous that she decided to publish her parenting hacks so everyone could benefit from them, and that’s how Diapers, Daycare, and Deadlines – Survival Hacks for Super Busy Parents was born. The most rewarding part of publishing for Jan has been the feedback from parents who share that her book has helped them become better parents in many ways!

Book-a-Day #Giveaway Featuring Author Denise Flagg

Leave a comment on today’s post and you’re eligible to win this author’s giveaway. Each day in November that you comment gives you an entry into the Grand Prize giveaway at the end of them month! (Print copies for US residents only, please. If you live outside the US and win, you will receive a digital copy of this book.)

When my husband and I lost our dog, Klaus, to lymphoma, we were devastated.  He had just turned six. We attempted chemotherapy, but in the end, cancer won. Then, just like that, the happy, ‘I’m-so-excited-to-see-you’ doggie dance and dog kisses were gone every time we entered our front door. Weeks later, my husband turned to me and said, “Since you love to write, you should write a children’s book about a dog named Klaus.” It was one of those ‘light bulb’ moments, and I wondered why I hadn’t thought of it myself.

For years, I wrote poetry and had a few poems published, but I always dreamed of writing a children’s book. So, I sat armed with pen and paper and wrote. I allowed my imagination to whisk me away to an early morning walk with Klaus. Writing helped me work through the grief of missing my sweet Klaus. When my story, Klaus’ First Winter, was complete, I tucked it away and had plans to someday use this book as a vehicle to help animals. I didn’t know at the time how that would happen, but I did know some day it would happen.

Here I am, years later, with two published books: Klaus’ First Winter and Christmas with Klaus.

My love of books and for animals have merged together to create a children’s book series that entertains as it educates. I serve on a volunteer committee for Friends of the Providence Animal Care and Control Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to supporting the animals at the Providence Animal Shelter. A percentage of all book sales, both hard cover and kindle, are donated to Friends of the PACCC and helps contribute to funding the Mobile Grooming Program at the shelter. I am a member of the Association of Rhode Island Authors and live in southern New England with my husband Ernie and our rescue dog, Jax.  I am a passionate advocate for making a difference by adopting at your local animal shelter.  Currently, I am writing the third book in my series.

My books can be purchased at retails store across Rhode Island: Stillwater Books, Barrington Books, Imagine Gift Store, Jack’s Snacks-A Dog’s Bakery, Somewhere in Tyme, Petals Gift Store, Woodlawn Gardens Florist, Tally’s Religious Gifts (Christmas book only at Tally’s) and online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.  They can also be purchased in Webster, Massachusetts at Booklover’s Gourmet.

About my books:

 Klaus’ First Winter

On this adventure, you will discover, alongside Klaus, how Sally Squirrel, Billy the Eastern Bluebird, and Freddie Frog survive the cold and snowy winter months. Have fun while learning about migration and hibernation on this fascinating autumn morning walk.

Christmas With Klaus

When Denise and Ernie carry a tree into the house, set it in a stand, and waters it, a baffled and curious Klaus wonders why. Klaus turns to his friend Pebbles, who is a dog too, for the answer. Join in the excitement as Klaus plays in snow for the first time, discovers an ornament with his name hanging from a tree branch and learns about Christmas traditions and the reason for the season.

It’s #RIAuthor Month! Meet Lisa Batch

TheFirstSong.jpg

The premise for The First Song is, peace is obtainable through open communication. In the case of this children’s book, peace was obtained in the jungle village 30,000 years ago by singing together; people with people of other ethnicities, and animals with animals, and people with animals. All the jungle inhabitants bonded in friendship while singing together, the first song ever made up! There were very few howls and growls anymore, and best of all, there was no killing each other. These new friends discovered other means of survival.

It’s #RIAuthor Month! Meet Kevin Mulhern and Cody the Cloud

Cody Kevin CloseUp With Cloud Background For Site

Rhode Island author Kevin Mulhern’s children’s book Cody the Cloud (ages 3-8) features a strong, positive message about treating others with respect, not bullying others, and believing in oneself. It’s an inspiring story about a cloud who can’t make it rain, a boy who can’t work on his father’s farm, and how, in spite of being made fun of, the two unite when a drought strikes to prove how the power of love and friendship can literally save the world.

Since its publication by Mascot Books in 2015, Kevin has read Cody the Cloud at over 150 schools, libraries, bookstores, book fairs, malls and more. The greatest honor for Kevin came in 2016 when Cody the Cloud was chosen as “Children’s Book of the Year” by New England Head Start, the local chapter of the national Head Start social services organization. Cody the Cloud has been mentioned on Channel 10 WJAR News on two occasions for its fundraising initiatives and Kevin was interviewed on “The Rhode Show” to discuss the charitable endeavors he’s pursued with the book. Cody has also been featured in numerous local print publications and radio interviews. It’s carried by Barnes and Noble and many major retailers as well as Amazon.

Kevin wrote Cody the Cloud largely to help raise funds for charitable causes he’s passionate about, donating a portion of proceeds from sales over the years to a wide range of charities including cancer research, helping inner city youth, assisting children with physical or developmental disabilities, veterans’ causes, and animal shelters, to name a few. Kevin has donated thousands of dollars to charities thanks to the support Cody has gotten.

Kevin Mulhern

Kevin is a professional writer whose 20-year career has spanned writing comedy for national network television and local radio (currently as producer and on-air talent of The Paul and Al Show on 94 HJY), serving as an award-winning newspaper editor and journalist, a magazine columnist, and children’s author. He lives in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, with his wife, Jennifer, 4 year-old son, Liam, and brand new puppy, Argos.

Cody the Cloud can be purchased for a discounted price of $12.95 for the remainder of 2017 at www.CodyTheCloud.com. For all books purchased through this site, Kevin donates at least 10 percent of proceeds to charity. Currently he’s raising funds for Hasbro Children’s Hospital, whose wonderful doctors saved the life of a baby of his dear friends and who have kept her in remission from cancer for five years! Kevin is happy to sign all books purchased through his site with personalized messages.  Contact him at CodyTheCloudBook@gmail.com.

For the first ten orders that come from readers of this blog, one book will be randomly chosen to be given away free. Place your order at CodyTheCloud.com and, if chosen, your money will be refunded when the book is shipped to you.
