Julien Ayotte

Perennial favorite and, in his own words, “one of the oldest members of ARIA,” Julien Ayotte has been there almost from the beginning of ARIA back in 2012.  He is the author of seven novels and is currently working on number eight.  His novels have amassed twelve national book awards, and Jon Land, the USA Today best-selling author, says that Julien’s mystery thrillers are comparable to Harlan Coben and David Baldacci.  Paul Caranci, another Rhode Island author and historian, has called Julien the best mystery-thriller writer in Rhode island.  Julien has been a featured speaker at numerous venues in New York and New England on his best-selling and award winning historical fiction Code Name Lily.  His latest release, The Treasure, promises to be as engaging as all his others.

In The Treasure, Sebastian Reynolds, a noted Canadian columnist, teams up with Colonel Jerome Woodrow, a retired Vietnam veteran with a heart of gold, to find the killer of his old military comrade on a Caribbean island.  Together, they unearth a treasure from the past.  From the Nova Scotia peninsula, to a South Sea island, to a villa on Turks and Caicos, and to the rolling hills of Virginia, the quest for pirated riches from long ago leads to murder, intrigue, and an unexpected romance along the way.

Julien will be giving away a signed copy of this book to a lucky winner.  Interested in taking a peek at his other award-winners, go to www.julienayotte.com for more.  You won’t be disappointed.

Does the past ever really leave us? Not in Amy Lynch’s world.

What starts out to be a well-deserved vacation for Amy – volunteering at an archaeological dig on the outskirts of Paris – turns ugly when the head archaeologist is found dead at the dig-site. A recently uncovered relic from World War II threatens to expose treachery and betrayal from the time of the German Occupation. It endangers the life of anybody bold enough to delve into its significance.

New England Casualty and Indemnity, the insurance company where Amy works as a claims investigator, is insuring the dig. Amy’s world turns upside-down as she reverts from vacation mode to conduct a full-blown investigation. She meets with obstacles, resistance and threats to her own safety – as well as an adorable Frech detective – in her quest to unmask a traitor.

Paula is giving away a copy of Dead Drop to one lucky winner. Just leave a comment on this blog post telling us where your favorite vacation destination is.

Paul’s new book, The Goblin Pitcher, is available as an ebook, paperback, and as a jacketed hardcover. The print versions feature sketches drawn by an aspiring young artist, 9-year-old Avery Palmer, of Attleboro, Massachusetts. The Goblin Pitcher tells the story of 11-year-old Jake Lupo, who loves baseball more than anything else but does not believe in his ability. Despite his father being a professional pitcher, Jake’s fear of failing has kept him from competing against other children. When his father, who has recently recovered from an injury, is invited to pitch for an independent team, the family moves to Pine Barrows, a far-flung forested mountain outpost.

Jake is excited about his father’s chance at a comeback, but he soon learns that he’s not the only one in Pine Barrows who loves baseball. Goblins love to play baseball too, and Pine Barrows happens to be chock full of them. Then Jake discovers that the region is occupied by two factions of warring goblins. Seeking to take control of the goblin kingdom, the leader of the evil goblins kidnaps Jake’s mother and bans baseball, a game which itself is a natural source of power for the goblins. It turns out that Jake has a secret kinship with the legendary beings, and he is the only one who can save them, their kingdom, and his mother. However, Jake must believe in himself and play a winner-take-all game against the best goblin players in Pine Barrows.

Hank Ellis

Author Hank Ellis is no stranger to environmental issues. Gaining his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in natural resource science and wildlife management and working for an environmental agency for thirty-two years has made him aware of many problems facing the world. His desire is to help young people awaken to and enjoy the mystery of creation, to recognize its many problems, and to realize they have their own special gifts to help heal the earth.

His first book in The Promise series, A Perilous Journey, was a finalist in the Independent Publishers of New England (http://www.IPNE.org) book awards contest for literary fiction in 2018. In this book, Peter and David Wilson are two adventurous, adolescent brothers who make a fantastic discovery in a nearby forest. One afternoon in late June, they stumble upon a huge mysterious cavern protected from the elements for centuries. Using dreams and deciphering riddles, they travel through underground passageways to meet the maker of their dreams. Through a series of strange and supernatural encounters, Peter and David must rely on resourcefulness, perseverance, and love to lead them to an opportunity they could never have imagined and make a decision that will change their lives forever.

The second book, Discovering Their Gifts, was the IPNE book awards winner for literary fiction in 2020.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you were an adolescent boy or girl and you were given the incredible gift of invisibility? And suppose you could heal animals and people but you couldn’t tell anyone? In this second book of The Promise series, two ordinary brothers, Peter and David Wilson, and eventually a beautiful young girl from Brazil, are given these gifts and more. But special gifts often require extraordinary sacrifice. No one–friends, schoolmates, even Mom and Dad–can know of these remarkable abilities. For if they do, their gifts will vanish in an instant. Is the cost of this secrecy too high? Can they juggle everyday life with their newfound talents? Travel with these special youngsters and learn from their mysterious mentors in a fantastic adventure as they use their amazing powers to help save the beleaguered earth.

Back from a harrowing adventure on the Arctic ice, most people would need a rest. But young adventurers Peter, Catia, and David aren’t most people. A centuries old mystery is sitting in the corner of the underground cavern waiting to be solved. The sphere has been gathering dust for longer than any of the oldest caretakers can remember. It’s not till a nasty disgruntled caretaker named Luke teams up with the young teens that a solution is possible. But Luke’s selfishness raises the stakes for everyone.

These books are adventure stories for adolescents and curious adults that celebrate friendship and teamwork, respect for all cultures, our divine connection, and the importance of caring for our planet. Appropriate for ages 10 to 110!

Hank’s writings have also been featured in various anthologies by members of the Association of RI Authors (ARIA).

Janet DeLeo

After being a business teacher and an entrepreneur, Janet DeLeo found time to return to one of her first loves – writing. She started by writing poetry when she was young and then started writing anything that inspired her. She frequently started a sentence with the words, “When I write my book…,” but She didn’t know how serious she was when she blurted those words out.

Janet also discovered a new love – painting. She now paints anything that doesn’t move. She also creates an endless array of items with glass.

In no particular order, her current inspiration is fueled by three things: She is a Baby Boomer; she is a second-generation Italian-American; and she was six years old before she moved away from a little cocoon called “Federal Hill” in Providence, Rhode Island. That’s when she realized that everyone’s last name did not end in a vowel and that most men did not have funny names like LaLa, Slick, Blondie, or Bugs! She is also a proud graduate of a Catholic elementary school AND a Catholic high school. She is making a point that this background supplies her with enough material to write for the rest of her life!

What a great title for a book! A Life Well Lived: Accompany my Father, a First-generation Italian American, as he Journeys Through the Depression, World War II, Fatherhood, … Patriarch in his First Ninety-four Years.  As Janet says, she met her father when he was twenty-three years old. She did not realize it then, but now she sees he had already packed a lifetime into his time on the planet. At ninety-four years young, he says his life has gone by in the “blink of an eye.” No matter how he or anyone else describes it, what a life it has been! It is the personification of the term, “a life well lived.” Walk the streets of Federal Hill. Savor the wonderful aromas wafting from the kitchens of the Italian immigrants. Watch as they develop strong families and help construct a new country. Appreciate them as they strive for and attain their share of the American Dream.

Janet will give away a copy of her book – a treasure for anyone with Italian ancestry, or anyone who enjoys reading about the past – to one winner. Just comment below and answer this question: What is your favorite Italian food?

M.A. Guglielmo

M.A. Guglielmo is a neurosurgeon, mother of two awesome daughters, and a life-long fan of speculative fiction. Her Italian grandmother may or may not have been able to cast the evil eye on difficult neighbors, and she loves telling a good story, especially if magical curses and witty villains are involved.

Her interest in Middle Eastern politics and culture inspires her to incorporate mythology and folklore from the region into her writing projects. After having the wits scared out of her by ghost tales told to her over a campfire in the Moroccan Sahara, she’s come up with a plan to travel to all the potential settings for her novels. Since those include the mountain-ringed home of the Jinn and a modernized version of the Greek Underworld, some items on her bucket list might be harder to achieve than others.

She enjoys interacting with other authors in classes such as Odyssey’s on-line writing workshop and in her local writer’s group, as well as attending conventions like Boston’s Muse and the Marketplace and Rhode Island’s own Ocean State Summer Writing Conference.

She’s co-authored several papers in clinical journals and a chapter in a medical textbook. Her current fiction projects are described here (https://www.maguglielmo.com/books/) and she posts about the research for her writing here (https://www.maguglielmo.com/blog/).

Maria was born and raised in Rhode Island, and graduated from Yale University with a degree in biology. She completed her M.D. degree at Brown University Medical School, and went on to complete the Brown University Neurosurgical Residency program. After several years enjoying the company of sunny friends and overcast skies in Portland, Oregon, she moved back to Rhode Island, where she’s a neurosurgeon in academic practice. She lives there with her two daughters, assorted pets, and is always dreaming of the stories that can come out of her next travel destination.

In Book 1, Summoned, the reader is introduced to Zahara, party girl of the paranormal, who floats up out of a lamp in Daniel Goldstein’s apartment, ready to trick an evil sorcerer into giving up his soul. But Daniel, whose Moroccan grandmother has reached out from beyond the grave to command him to raise a jinn, wants to do good – by stopping a vengeful fallen angel.

In Book 2, Soul to Steal, Zahara is back in the human world enjoying cool fashion, hot cars, and hotter men – anything to avoid obsessing over Harut, the fallen angel who saved her life and stole her heart in Morocco. Besides, her usually disapproving mother has given her an important quest: find and protect a half-human cousin who’s gained strange new magical powers.

Book 3, Price to Pay, finds Zahara tired of saving the world from imminent doom, and her enemy to almost-lover Harut’s “no hanky-panky before marriage” rule is driving her crazy. To take the fight to his evil brother Marut, Zahara returns to the land of the jinn to cobble together an alliance between the peoples of the Mountains of Qaf to defeat the fallen angel. Everything that can’t go wrong does anyway, and after dealing with a malfunctioning magic carpet and killer unicorns, Zahara has to steal back an enchanted feather from a feared necromancer and face down the father she’s never known. As more of the jinn join Marut in his plan to destroy humanity, Zahara needs Harut’s help more than ever—to save the world and her heart. But when the final confrontation comes, defeating one brother may mean Zahara loses the other forever.
