Maria Kamoulakou

I’m happy to welcome children’s book author Maria Kamoulakou to the blog today. Hi, Maria! I have questions for you:

What name do you write under?  Maria Kamoulakou

Where is your hometown? My hometown is Athens, Greece, but I currently live in Springfield, MA.

What genre(s) do you write? Children’s books for ages 7-10

What have you written?

Sky Cloud City: The Adventures of Hope & Trusty, 2016.

Sky Cloud City Activity Book, 2016 and 2018.

Arthur the Fly-Slayer & the Forty Dragons, 2018.

La Cité Sur les Nuées: Les Aventures d’Espérance et Fidèle, 2020.

La Cité Sur les Nuées Cahier d’ Activités, 2020.

Sky Cloud City: The Adventures of Hope & Trusty, 2021 (chapter book edition).

(Who are some of your favorite children’s book authors? Since I moved to the US, I’ve come to appreciate the books by E.B.White, Robert McCloskey, and Jane Yolen.

What were some of your favorite books growing up? During my childhood in Greece, I adored Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey for kids, The Little Match Girl and The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. I still have the books and browse them from time to time.

What do you like best about writing? The transformation of an idea to a story to an illustrated children’s book. Getting to know my characters through writing and then visually meeting them on paper is a truly magical experience.

What do find most challenging about writing? Making time to write! The endless revisions and rewriting that follow a rough draft. The commitment it takes to turn an idea to a published children’s book.

Where do you draw your inspiration? Greek culture is a huge driving force behind me. Back in 2013, I made it my goal to familiarize English-speaking children with ancient Greek culture, Greek literature and traditional Greek folktales with kid-friendly retellings. My aim is to reach readers from as many cultural backgrounds as possible, not exclusively kids of Greek descent.

SECOND GIVEAWAY!

An award-winning chapter book inspired by an ancient Greek comedy (The Birds, Ornithes) by Aristophanes. When two young friends purchase a pair of talking birds, an adventure set in ancient Greece begins! The two friends -Hope and Trusty- embark on a journey to the Land of the Birds, accompanied by two caged crows and a couple of stray dogs. There they meet a colorful king and address a hostile assembly of birds. With skill, eloquence and courage, the two friends end up uniting the birds in a common goal: to erect a huge city high up in the clouds. The founding of this city shakes up humankind and humbles Zeus and the Olympian gods. It triggers a series of events that benefit the birds and improves their status in the world.

Written by a Greek archaeologist, this fun retelling of a popular ancient Greek play is an ode to friendship and to promises kept. It highlights the benefits of brotherhood, unity, democracy and peace. The story sends out a very positive message to young readers: never hesitate to dream big. Seemingly impossible goals CAN be reached with hard work and collaboration.

The skillful artwork by accomplished Greek artist, Natalia Kapatsoulia, brings the story to life, rendering the book appealing to kids and parents alike.

Sky Cloud City is a short chapter book for ages 7+, grades 2-4 and for the young at heart…

An absolute must-have for the kids who LOVE Greek mythology.

You can win a copy of this delightful book by answering a question: What is your favorite bird?

And where is your hometown? Tiverton, Rhode Island

What genre(s) do you write? Epic Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Sports Memoir

And what have you written? The Overlords fantasy series (Legend of the Treasure, 2006; The Talisman of Unification, 2007; Journey to Salvation, 2012; Mission of the Kings, 2019). My baseball memoir, Love Winning (2021).

What do find most challenging about writing? Staying focused and leaving social media behind! There’s always another task to do, another text to respond to, and another post to write. Carving out time to write can be a challenge.

Where do you draw your inspiration? I’ve always been a “Star Wars” guy and I love the universe where all my heroes are from. Those movies and books have always inspired me to write, as well as Lord of the Rings, “Game of Thrones,” and “The X-Files.” The Beatles were also a huge inspiration. I could see their music.

You’ve just been given the chance to collaborate on a book with Andy Weir. What’s the title going to be? Since Andy Weir writes science fiction and is an engineer like me, we collaborate on a book called First Contact. Stephen King would just laugh at my ideas!

When the funeral shroud is cast over her, his father names his son Pall. It will soon become a name that strikes a shiver of fear into the hearts of those who hear it in combat.

A lone survivor on a battlefield many years later, Pall dazedly recovers from the wounds of war. Despite the dead cast about him, everything he looks upon is unfamiliar to him. What ensues from this deadly encounter is an elusive journey for truth. Yet, while it is haunted by a ravening demon that is out to destroy Pall and John, the vision and prayers of a startlingly beautiful young woman protect them from afar.

Rhode Island Authors Showcase – Featuring Debbie Tillinghast!

The Rhode Island Authors Showcase is back! Each day in November, I’ll be featuring a different RI author. Each post features a giveaway – a book, an anthology, or something else! The big prizes will be chosen, again using a random number generator, on December 7.

Debbie Kaiman Tillinghast

My friend Debbie Tillinghast is here today, and I couldn’t be happier. Naturally, I’ve got questions:

What name do you use as an author? Debbie Kaiman Tillinghast

And where is your hometown? Prudence Island, Rhode Island during my childhood, Now Chepachet, Rhode Island

What genre(s) do you write? Fiction, Memoir, Poetry

What have you written? The Ferry Home (memoir), 2015; A Dream Worth Keeping (novel), 2020; A Gift of Cookies, A Gift of Love (cookbook and memoir), 2022. My poetry also has been featured in all seven of the ARIA anthologies (https://tinyurl.com/nhexeku6)

Who are some of your favorite authors? Jenny Colgan, Elin Hilderbrand, Debbie Macomber

What were your favorite books growing up? All the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder; The Nancy Drew Mystery series by Carolyn Keene; Mr. Poppers Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

What do you like best about writing? I lose myself in words and stories, and I can write myself to peace. I can live everything twice. I see the daffodils in the spring, but I can write about them any time and experience again their dancing yellow dresses swirling in the air. Details in life matter, and moments that might have vanished unnoticed, I save on the page.

What do you find most challenging about writing? Sometimes my mind disappears when I want it to be present. It wanders through bills to be paid, laundry to be washed, or the lawn that needs mowing. I want to call it back, to sit and tell my pen what to write, but it can’t be bothered. It gets lost in a world of concrete blocks, and I want to stroll through a field of tulips.

Where do you draw your inspiration? When I walk, my brain takes flight in unexpected directions. My mind moves with my body, it spins a story in time to my steps, and I write dialogue to the rhythm of my feet. I wrote The Ferry Home and A Dream Worth Keeping as I walked, with a recorder in my hand.

Youve just been given the chance to collaborate on a book with Erin Hilderbrand. Whats the title going to be? Island Girls

Where do you draw your inspiration? I love the process of writing, so my inspiration comes from that drive to push forward, to put the last puzzle piece in place. As for ideas, they come from everywhere-something someone says, an article I read, a story I’m told.

Mary Catherine Volk

Very happy to welcome back Mary Catherine Volk to today’s blog. Mary Catherine is a truly gifted and compassionate individual. I’ve asked her the usual questions:

Where is your hometown? Narragansett, RI

Caroline Myss, five-time New York Times bestseller and author of 10 books on mysticism and wellness: Intimate Conversations with the Divine, Sacred Contracts, and Why People Don’t Heal & How They Can.

Louise Hay, founder of Hay House Publishing. She was a motivational speaker and wrote her first book at age 60. She then went on to launch the first self-publishing book company, Hay House Publishing. Her self-help books were so motivating and inspiring!

What were your favorite books growing up? Change your Thoughts – Change your Mind by Dr. Wayne Dyer, self-help author and motivational speaker; The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

As a child, I loved to draw cartoons and write children’s stories. The “Peanuts” comic strip by Charles Schulz was my favorite.  My high school art teacher, Carl Rittman, was a college classmate of Charles Schulz. He told us a story how their art professor had once told Charles Schulz to give up on being an artist, he had no talent! So it surprised everyone to see him become the most famous student in their class. Mr. Rittman was a well-known Rhode Island landscape artist but he realized and encouraged all of his students to follow dreams and passion.  Be inspired and creative, it may just make you famous.  My dream was to be a cartoonist at Disney when I grew up.

What do you like best about writing? Meeting people at book signing events and hearing how much my book has helped them in their grieving process. They order autographed copies to give as gifts. This inspires me to write another book.

What do you find most challenging about writing? Setting aside the time to write and stay focused.

Where do you draw your inspiration? I draw my inspiration from author Louise Hay. She published her first book at 60 years old and I started writing my first book at age 61.

You’ve just been given the chance to collaborate on a book with Louise Hay. What’s the title going to be? You Are Never too Old To Do What You Love

Belle A. DeCosta

Forced to take a hiatus or lose her job, and at the strong suggestion of a trusted brother, Caroline finds herself exiled to the abandoned family cabin in the backwoods of Maine.

Will it be enough to save her?

NOTE: I loved this novel! Belle’s writing is exemplary, and she knows how to tell a story. Want to win a copy? (Answer: yes, you do). Just answer this question? Would you rather live in New York City or in a remote corner of Maine?

Rhode Island Authors Showcase – Featuring Dr. Karen Petit!

The Rhode Island Authors Showcase is back! Each day in November, I’ll be featuring a different RI author. Each post features a giveaway – a book, an anthology, or something else! All you have to do to be eligible for the daily drawing is leave a comment on the blog post. I’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner one week after the blog post (to give you time to catch up).

By commenting on each post, you’re also entered to win our bigger prizes: GRAND PRIZE is a $250 Amazon gift card, BONUS PRIZE is a $100 Amazon gift card, and the CHEER UP YOU WON SOMETHING PRIZE is a $50 Amazon gift card. The big prizes will be chosen, again using a random number generator, on December 7.

Dr. Karen Petit

I’ve asked Karen a few questions!

Where is your hometown? Cranston, Rhode Island

What genre(s) do you write? Historic novels and poetry

What have you written? Paw Dream Mazes (2021), Amazing Holiday Paws (2020), Holidays Amaze (2018), Unhidden Pilgrims (2017), Roger Williams in an Elevator (2017), Mayflower Dreams (2017), Banking on Dreams (2017)

What do you like best about writing?  I love to analyze what I’ve written, so I can see my view about different things. Poetry is especially fun to write and to analyze. It’s almost like playing a game. I can also write one poem, be busy for a few weeks, and then write another poem when I have enough spare time. Some of my poems are actually long narrative poems, so writing poetry can be sort of like writing prose, but with multi-modal elements.

What do you find most challenging about writing? I sometimes really want to write and just do not have enough time to write.

Where do you draw your inspiration? My inspiration comes from my reality and from my previous writings. For example, after writing about the Pilgrims for Mayflower Dreams, I wanted to also look at Rhode Island historical elements and write about Roger Williams. I loved the idea of using freedom as one of the elements of my next novel. I was then stuck in an elevator for about forty minutes, which was my inspiration for Roger Williams in an Elevator.

Another example of my reality and previous writings inspiring me is this book of poetry: Paw Dream Mazes. One of my three cats is on the cover, and I obviously love this cover a lot. I also have seen all three of my cats dreaming. They all do things like twitch their paws while they dream. The dream/reality connections for my earlier books also inspired me to write about animal dreams. The maze poems in my first two books of poetry were an inspiration for focusing on the maze idea in my third book of poetry.

Karen’s author website, which has connections to all of her book websites, is  www.drkarenpetit.com

Karen would love to give away a copy of her most recent book, Paw Dream Mazes. Her question for you is this: What is your favorite animal and why is this one your favorite? Just comment below and you’re entered! And don’t forget, leave a comment on each day’s post for more chances to win our big prizes.

What do you like best about writing? Telling a story, creating perilous adventures, letting my mind wander.

What do you find most challenging about writing? Writer’s block. When it occurs—not if—I wonder how to continue or end a story. Solution: I’ll end my session for hours, days, or even weeks if necessary, and change focus completely. I like woodworking, turning wood on a lathe, or working in the yard. It’s amazing how clearing your mind helps the process. Getting stressed
is the worst thing that can happen.

Where do you draw your inspiration? Past events, life. I imagine myself in the scene and what I or other friends and relatives would do.

You’ve been given the chance to collaborate on a novel with CS Lewis. What’s the title going to be? Although intimidating, I’d jump at the chance! I love his books. And we’re both believers in the Triune God: (God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). My books are filled with references to the “Maker” or “Maker of the universe” and my characters are given amazing “gifts” by God’s
intermediary, the guardian Eli. Lewis writes of interdimensional and time travel, as do I. Our
book would be titled Journey to Othertime. Othertime is a word used in Lewis’ book The
Dark Tower.

You’ve just been given the chance to collaborate on a book with one of your favorite authors. What’s the title going to be? It would have to be with Gwendolyn, the only one of the three still with us. The title will be Within the Writers’ Con Whorl

The Territories have been unified for a thousand years, brought together under the sword of Harra Ardrassis and the sorcerous power of his immortal sister, Haena. But the Unification has always been contentious; hostility and distrust grow stronger every year. Surrounding the Territories is the Disian Curtain, a desolate darkness filled with Infernals, ravenous, twisted horrors beyond imagination. Ruled by the Diaboli Domini, these terrors desire nothing more than to devour the flesh and souls of all humanity… and the Disian Curtain is encroaching ever closer. From the Territory of Talgourge comes Kyu, The Unknown, a man whose past, and face, are a complete mystery, even to him. A rising celebrity in the popular and lethal sport of arena fighting, Kyu’s lack of identity drives him to question everything, including the profession at which he excels. When he finally discovers who, and what, he really is, and meets a young woman who gives his empty life meaning, Kyu wants to walk away from the violence and live on his own terms. But with the Territories teetering on the brink of continent-wide warfare, and Dis’ unspeakable nightmares approaching, powers both human and Infernal have plans of their own. They will do anything to control Kyu and the nascent power he is beginning to realize. Kyu, however, is much more powerful than they know, and he will do anything to protect… or avenge… those he loves.
