Rhode Island Authors Showcase – Featuring Mike Squatrito!

The Rhode Island Authors Showcase is back! Each day in November, I’ll be featuring a different RI author. Each post features a giveaway – a book, an anthology, or something else! All you have to do to be eligible for the daily drawing is leave a comment on the blog post. I’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner one week after the blog post (to give you time to catch up).

By commenting on each post, you’re also entered to win our bigger prizes: GRAND PRIZE is a $250 Amazon gift card, BONUS PRIZE is a $100 Amazon gift card, and the CHEER UP YOU WON SOMETHING PRIZE is a $50 Amazon gift card. The big prizes will be chosen, again using a random number generator, on December 7.

Author J. Michael Squatrito, Jr.

Today I welcome my pal Mike Squatrito to the showcase. Besides being a successful author, Mike serves as president of our Association of Rhode Island Authors. I’ve got questions for him.

So, Mike, we all know you as Mike. But what name do you use as an author? I write using my given name, J. Michael Squatrito, Jr.

And where is your hometown? Tiverton, Rhode Island

What genre(s) do you write? Epic Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Sports Memoir

And what have you written? The Overlords fantasy series (Legend of the Treasure, 2006; The Talisman of Unification, 2007; Journey to Salvation, 2012; Mission of the Kings, 2019). My baseball memoir, Love Winning (2021).

Who are some of your favorite authors? Stephen King, Andy Weir

What were some of your favorite books growing up? The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings

What do you like best about writing? Being able to create a story that, hopefully, people can enjoy and escape in. Times are tough and my books provide an escape from reality.

What do find most challenging about writing? Staying focused and leaving social media behind! There’s always another task to do, another text to respond to, and another post to write. Carving out time to write can be a challenge.

Where do you draw your inspiration? I’ve always been a “Star Wars” guy and I love the universe where all my heroes are from. Those movies and books have always inspired me to write, as well as Lord of the Rings, “Game of Thrones,” and “The X-Files.” The Beatles were also a huge inspiration. I could see their music.

You’ve just been given the chance to collaborate on a book with Andy Weir. What’s the title going to be? Since Andy Weir writes science fiction and is an engineer like me, we collaborate on a book called First Contact. Stephen King would just laugh at my ideas!

  4. I would find a place so unimaginable beautiful and peaceful. Birds all different colors and where all animals walk with us. My family would travel with me. Where we would sit by a stream of many colors to picnic. Where angels come to visit.

  5. ten billion dollars that I could give away to the people in the world who are starving. I initially wanted to say to find God and heaven, but I don’t want to hurt my family, friends, and pets by dying. I’d want to find God and heaven while staying alive.

  6. A nice, roomy flat in Paris on the ground level and with a central garden and a fountain! The only alternative universes I seek are among those that really exist, and I have never been able to maintain suspension of disbelief in alien shows or books, although many of them are amusing. I watched Lord of the Rings 379 times with my youngest son, so I did give it a try. But all 4 of my sons like sci-fi, so I’m the odd one out!
