Risa Nyman

Risa Nyman was born in Boston and has the accent to prove it. Until a recent move to the Ocean State, Risa lived within ten miles of Boston for decades.

She has worked as Executive Director and President of the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts and Chair of the Diversity Implementation Task Force for the League of Women Voters of the U.S. This nonpartisan organization works to promote active participation in our democracy. Risa has moderated candidates’ debates, organized voter registration drives, and get-out-the-vote campaigns. The League is the only direct descendant of the National Woman’s Suffrage Association and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2020, the year the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote was ratified.

Risa’s deep dive into creative writing started when she found three pennies in a neat stack in a completely empty apartment that belonged to her mother. It’s a long story. She was sure those magical pennies would make a great story.

When not writing, you might find Risa reading, exercising or doing therapeutic ironing (yes, there is such a thing.)

How about these books??!! In Spooked by a Suspicion, Rocky is shocked when his mother announces her intention to marry Ted, a devious man with a devil’s beard, ominous eyebrows in constant motion, and black, beady eyes. A series of strange accidents convince Rocky that Ted is using evil powers against him, and he is determined to stop the marriage. When Ted arranges
to work at Rocky’s summer program, Rocky plots with his girlfriend Olive to expose Ted in an epic showdown.

In Swallowed by a Secret, 12-year-old Rocky’s father dies suddenly, and he learns the “his heart
stopped” story is bogus. Immediately after the funeral, his mother sticks the For-Sale sign in the lawn and whisks them out of town as if living there has become too dangerous. As his trust in his one remaining parent unravels, Rocky is determined to crack the secret about how his father
really died. For Rocky, the road to the truth involves eavesdropping, snooping, and listening to advice from his dead father who urges him on a risky journey. Will Rocky have to rethink who was the father he thought he knew? Sometimes it may be better to let a secret stay hidden.

  1. The ability to weave a story from seeing a stack of pennies is special. I would probably not have thought much about it at all! That’s a gift authors like Risa have, and I don’t, but I love to read and I look forward to reading both of these books. Unfortunately, I am not good at keeping secrets so I try to dissuade people from telling me things they don’t want anybody to know! I even wear a warning sign: “whatever happens in Vegas, will end up on Facebook.”
    Good luck Risa

  2. I am a strong endorser of wash and wear clothes. I have tried mental telepathy on those garments needing ironing, but have not succeeded yet, and passed those on to my Iron Whisperer, aka my wife. I too write mystery thrillers, and hopefully will be lucky enough to win yours.

  3. You bet I can! I am sitting on secrets that could destroy a family. It’s not dangerous or illegal. It would hurt an entire family if they knew of past indescretions.

  4. Your life’s work is so interesting and obviously fulfilling. Maybe women in those days had to keep many secrets just to survive! I will keep a secret if someone tells me something they ask to keep confidential!

  6. Nothing is secret in this today’s world of science and technology . But if any thing that is secret in this world, is human minds and his ever beating hearts . And a man like me can keep it secret for ever . No power on earth, no technology , no narco-tests can get my heart revealed for whom it is beating or for what it is beating . Similarly, everything cannot be decoded from human minds despite the thing that we have reached appropriately to the zenith of science and technology . Thanks !
