Welcome to the Blogging from A to Z Challenge! Each day in April (except Sundays) I’ll be posting about unusual and exotic foods.
A name familiar to crossword puzzle aficionados and Words with Friends players, nori is the Japanese name for edible seaweed. It is used mainly in Japanese cuisine as an ingredient to wrap sushi rolls. For this use, the nori must be made into sheets.
The finished dried sheets are made by shredding and rack-drying the seaweed, and is similar to papermaking. Here’s a guy attempting to make his own nori sheets at home:
While seaweed is a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and folate, it also contains toxic metals (arsenic and cadmium), whose levels vary among different nori products. Enjoy it in moderation, but don’t eat it every day.
So, would you eat nori?
I’m not a sushi fan but nori would be fine. Seaweed based food is getting more popular in Maine too. We have seasonings and other local products made from seaweed. I have one of the spices sitting in my spice rack now!Weekends In Maine

I would eat it. I like the seaweed snacks. I wasn’t aware that it was high in toxic elements. I will have to check on the brand I get. SeaSnax is organic, but I don’t know where they get their seaweeds.

I love it! I buy sheets and add it to soups. Or eat it alone. Nice and salty! Yum, yum!

I “might” have had it once at a Japanese restaurant………I didn’t like it! I did read an article on eating seaweed around the world though……..very interesting.

Well, you got me. I love sushi. And with a large Japanese population in my area, we have sushi stands in every grocery store. So, YES, YES, YES . I’ll eat it.
