Eko is what the author calls “tech fantasy,” in that it takes places on another world, Osha, but there are flying ships and cool technology, plus fast-paced action, detective work, sibling rivalry, and a touch of romance. The story follows Sydel, a medical apprentice with psychic abilities (called Eko), and a trio of estranged siblings, Phaira, Cohen and Renzo, who are tasked with the girl’s protection, and then her rescue, from malevolent forces. As one of six siblings, Walker has always been drawn to stories that delve into the natural drama between brothers and sisters. She’s also a big advocate for the promotion of complex female protagonists in genre fiction; she wants to see strong women who aren’t just tough and serious, but also funny, sexy, silly, and human, and she strove to create them in EKO.
Originally from Ontario, Canada, Loren Walker lives in Rhode Island and works a self-professed ‘million jobs,’ including grant writer, illustrator, non-profit manager and fitness instructor. In between shifts, she writes weird stories and poetry. Her debut publication, the fantasy-adventure novel EKO, was shortlisted for the Half the World Global Literari Award, and recently chosen as a Library Journal SELF-e Select Pick.
