Your Book Blog Tour – Is It Worth It?

I’m in the middle of a blog tour for Best Seller, hosted by Masquerade Tours. First time I ever tried this type of marketing. My take so far?

First, Dee at Masquerade Tours is easy to work with, and very efficient. She provided me with plenty of time to answers bloggers’ interview questions, etc. I chose a 7-day tour with 20 stops. Of those 20 stops, 6 of them are review stops, meaning the blogger posts an honest review of my book. And I chose to include a giveaway ($25 Amazon or B&N gift card) through Rafflecopter. Now, from what I’ve picked up this week, there are very few comments on the blogs. For the blogs that featured a good review of the book, that’s too bad, although I noticed that those reviewers were great about sharing on Facebook and Twitter (and I made a new friend in Melissa (The Book Binder’s Daughter). There was a mediocre review and one that was simply mean-spirited (in my opinion), but I took comfort in the fact that her blog wasn’t well written at all.

So, how much reach is there in these book blogs? Not sure, but I’d love to hear from other authors who have an opinion.

I decided to include a $25 Amazon (or B&N) gift card as part of this tour, and THAT has garnered me a slew of new followers on Facebook (author page likes), Twitter, and Pinterest. Plenty of folks have tweeted out about the book, and I’m very appreciative of that.

Look, we all want “reach.” Sales of Best Seller have been excellent, even before this week, so it’s hard to tell whether the tour has had an impact on sales. But it was worth doing if only for the experience, most of which was very positive.

  1. Martha, all you can do is the best you can do, especially as a self-published author without a big PR company behind you. That’s what I did with my novel and what you’ve done before and continue to do! Your novels are wonderful and will continue to find their readers. It’s just so hard sometimes! I enjoyed doing the blog tours and they continue to gain popularity and importance for authors. Good luck! xx cindy


  2. Sorry that you have had a partially negative experience, unfortunately sometimes it does happen. In my opinion and from many tours I have arranged and taken part in they all have good and bad points, but are a great marketing tool as part of a package combined with other events. Blog tours used in the correct way can boost sales, increase traffic and also boost numbers of followers/fans. The downside is there are so many tour companies out there that offer the service, you don’t know who and how many blogs they have on their lists. A new company may only have 50 or less on their list of bloggers to take part, other bigger companies will have 100’s if not 1000’s of bloggers with a wide range of followers themselves in the 100’s that will see you book/series. Also certain tour companies will do better with a certain genre of book as that is the area the blogs taking part gravitate in, not a bad thing unless the company you chose has more YA blogs and less Erotica blogs for example. With that you will be limited on the blogs taking part as well and the views and comments on each blog stop due only to genre promoted.

    Another thing is a lot of people will check blogs and not always comment, they don’t have time, they are on their phone or they are there just for the giveaway or the rafflecopter entries. Yes it does happen and always will no matter what you do, some just want the prize and nothing more. In the end you do have to do a multitude of different events especially on release because without any marketing, blog tours, events etc no one will know about your book at all and then no one will buy it.

    Blog tours have their place just choose the company wisely and always look into what they have done and provided not only for previous authors but in the sense of genre too.


  3. My own blog tour was wonderful fun and I too made new friends, but I found measuring the return on investment almost impossible. It was great, however, to get the reviews. I’m also a bit surprised that the reviewer you mentioned didn’t simply decline to post, if she didn’t care for the book.

  4. I’m so sorry to hear that there was a negative, mean-spirited review. It really surprises me because I loved the book. I actually have a policy about not posting negative reviews (if you can’t say something nice…) Your review has gotten lots of his on my blog in the days since it has been up. Masquerade Crew is great about sharing it on social media.


    1. Thanks, Melissa. I know the book isn’t for everyone (no book is), and one of the reviewers, while not loving the book, praised my writing. That meant a lot. The other reviewer actually got a few things wrong!

      I feel the same way you do about reviews, because I know how hard it is to write a book.
